Geography

The town of Nabadwip exists by the western bank of the river, Bhagirathi in the district of Nadia in the State of West Bengal. It is an ancient and unplanned town of an area of 11.66 Sq. Km with its own population of 1,15,036 as per Census - 2001. The density of population is 9,866 per Sq Km. The number of population living in the slums is 49,321 representing 42.78% of its population. This is a flood - prone town which witnessed devastating flood in the years 1971, 1981, 1999, 2000 and 2006. In almost all other years this town experienced flood like situation

Economics

Nabadwip is chiefly a trading centre. Jute, an agro- I industrial raw material is processed here, stored in the godowns and supplied to the jute - industries. The economy of this town is largely based on hand-loom / weaving industries. The Handloom products produced in the town and its adjoining areas are accumulated in the market known as haat (market). There are units making ready made garments, bidis (indian Cigarattes), and bell-metaled utensils, that is marketed in the local and adjoining areas
